ANN’S PUB Cast Portraits

March 20, 2013

I’m currently signed up to do the cinematography for a short horror film called “Ann’s Pub”.  Written and directed by Jerry DeMario, the project is currently in pre-production.  As an addition to the movie’s eventual website, I’ve begun taking portraits of the various cast/crew members.  Here are two of the main actors:

As a possible visual idea for an eventual movie poster, I shot and created this image:

The objects being held in each hand represent different symbolic elements featured in the story. The director wanted a representation similar to that of Kali, a Hindu goddess who has several arms.

Progress in Cinematography

January 16, 2013

As I have been fairly busy as of late and have not made myself enough time to maintain this blog, I’ve decided to change that by making some new posts.  Here are some shots that I lit and shot which I particularly like, most of which are from the upcoming movie “Outside of Darkness” (the trailer can be viewed here):

Most of the examples employ pronounced lighting ratios and close-ups.  My past experience as a photojournalist (where getting closer shots of subject matter is valued) and my love of the visual style of film noir play a large influence.

PHOTOS: 2010 Trip to China & Hong Kong

November 22, 2012

Back in December of 2010, I traveled to Hong King and China for several days as part of a trip organized by a teacher from college.  I took many photographs there, shared them with friends but, until now, never shared them with the public.  Here are a couple images:

Outside of Darkness: Portraiture

April 5, 2012

In addition to being the camera operator for the film project “Outside of Darkness,” I also provided still photography work for the website and other elements of the production.  The two actors seen together in one picture, Sharif Razzaq and Amber Martinez, play as Kael and Merrena, the movie’s main protagonists and onscreen couple.

Gun Shoot

April 23, 2011

Last Friday I created pictures of several handguns for a gun reviewer.  I utilized a simple two-light setup with an occasional fill card.  These were done on the dining room table of the reviewer’s kitchen.  The guns stood upright by leaning on a medicine capsule.  Both the shadows and capsule were later edited out in Photoshop.

The biggest challenge was making the engravings and details on the guns visible.  The dark-colored polymer guns were the hardest to light properly.

The Ruger SR1911 had the most visually pleasing design and was my favorite of the selections.

Seagrove: Thomas Pottery

April 21, 2011

On April 16th I went to Seagrove to see a tour of a potters’ studio and watch a pottery demonstration.  I visited Thomas Pottery and took pictures of its owner, Bobbie Thomas, at work.

You can see more of the potter’s work on her website .

Greensboro: Tea Party Rally

April 21, 2011

On April 15, I was assigned to cover a Tea Party rally held in downtown Greensboro which was hosted by the Conservatives for Guilford County.  I had never been to any event related to the tea party and was curious to know more about it.

The crowd and the rhetoric were fairly low-key.  It was a considerably different from the more controversial image portrayed in the press.
