PHOTOGRAPHY: Headshot (Jonathan)

Recently I was asked to create a headshot for an Jonathan, an actor submitting for a role in the TV series Banshee.  I chose the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh as the shooting location, taking advantage of the open shade of the building and the overcast weather that day. I’m glad to say the headshot photos did what they intended to do: Jonathan got a part in the show.  He’ll be featured as an extra in the final episode of season two.

Short Choreographed Martial Arts Fight Sequence

February 19, 2013

In advance of principal photography for the martial arts film, Lao Warrior, I had the opportunity to practice shooting a fight scene. The short sequence here which I shot and edited (minus a score and sound design) was created as part of an acting reel for Kenji Saykosky:

I had no knowledge of the choreography when I came on set so, before any real shooting began, I asked the actors to perform their routine several times (minus the props) and recorded those rehearsal performances from several angles to get an idea what would work.

Despite the planning, some elements of the shoot weren’t expected. For example, the table had some its support taken away and was expected to collapse when the actor was thrown onto it but instead it slipped out from underneath him–running into me. Fortunately, neither the camera nor myself got hurt and the way it made the screen go black provided a really nice editing transition.

In all, the sequence was an enjoyable shoot and I had a fun time working with everyone involved.

Outside of Darkness (Teaser Trailer With Movie Footage)

June 21, 2012

I’ve still been very busy with the movie “Outside of Darkness”.   The first part of the movie is finished, edited and being polished in post while the other parts are still being shot.   Because the first teaser trailer was shot very long ago, before the start of actual shooting, I created a trailer utilizing official footage.

Outside of Darkness: Teaser Trailer

March 4, 2012

Since fall of last year I have been extensively involved with a film project called “Outside of Darkness”.   It is a web series with elements of the supernatural.   The plot revolves around a Kael, a young man who is reeling over the unsolved death of his fiance, Merrena.   After experiencing several disturbing visions and voices, he is visited by a demon who gives him new information about her death.

Here is the teaser trailer which was recently released:

Most of the film has been shot around Raleigh.  The screenplay was adapted from a story written by Sharif Razzaq (the actor playing as Kael).  Working primarily as the director of photography but also, from time to time, the director, screenwriter, editor and casting producer, it is my most ambitious project to date.   Due to the dramatic nature of the movie, I have many opportunities to create very stylized shots so it is both exciting and challenging.   Episode one will be released soon as well as a website for it which I have been programming.   More to come.

Raleigh: First Weekend of Shooting for “Absolutely Positive”

October 28, 2011

Last weekend, shooting officially began for the short film “Absolutely Positive”, a short film written and directed by Anthony Williams about several individuals who get tested for AIDS.  Even though the work days were 12+ hours in length, I enjoyed the experience documenting the production and meeting many interesting people.  Here are some of the photographs I took:
