UNC FallFest

August 24, 2010

On Sunday evening (8/22), the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill held its annual FallFest event.   Started in 1997, FallFest provides new and returning UNC students who had just moved in a non-alcoholic alternative to off-campus parties and local bars.   Many of the university’s different clubs and student organizations had tables set up to attract new members and there were stations for games, such as an inflatable obstacle course and a dunk tank, set up on the university soccer field.   Attendance was very high among both freshman and upperclassmen.

Winston-Salem: Cribbage Tournament

August 24, 2010

Last Tuesday (8/17) I shot a cribbage tournament in Winston-Salem, NC, at the Polo Park Recreation Center as part of an assignment for school.   Held by the Twin City Cribbage Club, the tournament lasted three hours and consisted of nine singles matches between eight players.

All of the players were fifty and older but the atmosphere was anything but dull.   Most of the players were constantly cracking jokes on each other (“razzing”) and while tensions rose towards the final matches, the atmosphere generally stayed light.   Most of the players were raised in the New England region of the United States and there were a considerable number of former military members in attendance.   Every major branch was represented except for the Marines and the Coast Guard.
